If you are not an industry insider, you must be wondering what on earth the Met Gala is, and why there is the yearly hype around it, right? With mere hours to go, here’s everything we have gleaned so far about the biggest night on the fashion calendar…

What really is the Met Gala?

Officially known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit (hence the name: Met Gala), this black-tie extravaganza is an annual fundraiser dedicated to raising money for the Costume Institute.

It is one the most prestigious fashion events of the year with an exclusive guest list filled with only A-list celebrities, ‘it’ models, fabulous designers and industry big hitters. This notoriously difficult to get onto guest list has to be Anna Wintour-approved, editor in chief of Vogue and the chairperson of the Met Gala.

When is it?

The Met Gala always takes place on the first Monday in the month of May, falling this year on May 7th.

Theme, you say…

Every year, there’s a different theme that influences the dress code for the Met Gala. This makes it fascinating as we see stunning couture designs gracing the red carpet and the attendees who really hit the nail on the head or those who flopped miserably, in terms of the theme.

This year’s Met Gala theme is: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Yes, the theme hopes to tackle the influence of Catholicism on fashion, and fetaures designs from Coco Chanel and Balenciaga, alongside 40 pieces on loan from Vatican. Though the theme has been uber controversial and is sure to stir up more controversy, we look forward to see how celebrities, designers and stylists interpreted the theme without pushing style boundaries too hard.

Who is hosting?

Each year, the Met Gala invites celebrities to serve as honorary hosts for the event. This year the honour went to Donatella Versace, Amal Clooney and Rihanna.

When it comes to dressing for Met Gala themes, Rihanna knows est and we already know she will be a stand-out celerity at the event now that she’s been promoted to co-host.

We’ve put together an edit of some of the most epic looks at the Met Gala, including Met-Girl RiRi. Relive some of the best fashion moments in history
