Clear blemish-free skin is every woman’s dream, and some are lucky enough to have it. The COUTURE Africa beauty team went around asking women – whom we believe have amazing skin – what their secrets are to smooth, blemish free skin and came up with this list for you, to help you put brakes on the breakouts.

1. See a dermatologist for any extreme skin conditions, and follow their recommendations for 30 – 60days before choosing to resign.

2. Never – ever – sleep with your make-up on! Have a pack of make-up removal wipes by your beside or bathroom sink that you can quickly use when you have no energy for an entire skin care routine.

3. Use a primer before your foundation to give your skin extra protection.

4. Clean your make-up brushes once a week to prevent bacteria build up.

5. Once a week, spend a whole 24-hours without make-up to give your skin a break and time to breathe.

6. Keep your hands away from your face – at ALL times, as our hands are rife with bacteria.

7. Change your pillow case at least twice a week to prevent bacterial build up.

8. Air out your pillows at least once a month.

9. Wipe your phone frequently with anti-bacterial wipes. It spends way too much time near your face.

10. Avoid hair oils – if your hair falls on your face.

11. Change your shampoo or hair oil if you find a build-up of rashes around your forehead, you could be reacting to the chemicals in the oils.

12. If you wash your hair in the shower, ensure you cleanse your face after washing your hair, to remove any shampoo / conditioner / treatment that may have been left behind.

13. Use a facial mask at least once a week.

14. Clean out your pores by going for a facial every 4 – 6 weeks.

15. If you have oily skin, exfoliate your face once every two to three days to remove excess oil build up in your pores. Once a week, for dry skin.

16. Drink lots of water. It flushes out toxins, whose build up tends to reflect on your face first.

17. Get plenty of sleep, 7 – 8 hours a day is recommended. No amount of make-up can hide tiredness in your face.

18. Follow a cleanse-tone-moisturise facial routine religiously with products from one brand.

19. Use a sun protection cream, a moisturising cream with SPF 15 or higher or foundation with SPF 15 or higher, daily.

20. Exercise regularly. Sweating is also a great way to flush out toxins from the system.

21. Use a headband when exercising to avoid oil and sweat mix-up on your face.

22. Eliminate dairy and sugar from your diet for at least 30 days. If your skin does clear up, you may want to consider eliminating it completely.

23. Add green vegetables and foods high in Zinc and Vitamin-C to your diet.

24. To prevent fluid build-up under your eyes when sleeping – that result in eye bags - try sleeping with a higher pillow, and massage the fluid out of your eye bags in the morning.

25. Throw on a pair of sunglasses to prevent the skin around your eyes – which is the thinnest on your face – from the damaging effects of the sun.

26. Cleanse and moisturise upwards to open up your pores and ensure you truly remove all the dirt.

27. Apply make-up downwards to avoid excess product from clogging up your pores.

28. Don’t forget your neck. Extend all skin care routines to your neck area.

29. Do not neglect the rest of your body, and take care your skin. It is after all your largest organ.

30. Keep Calm! Stress reflects on the face first in form of breakouts, so incorporate some calming activities into your routine such as yoga, spa treatments and even more sex, to keep you happy and relaxed.
